What autumn leaves behind
A few things worth keeping when the year begins to turn.
Autumn arrives in fragments. One yellow branch appears above a street that still looks green. The air cools in the evening. A scarf returns to the hook beside the door. No single day announces the change.
I keep a small notebook for these details. Not a record of every outing, just a line when something catches my attention: the smell of damp earth after rain, a chestnut shell near the gate, the way a field looks when the sun sits lower.
The notes are not especially polished. Their value is in being specific. Reading them later brings back the texture of a day more readily than a general account of where I went.
At the end of the season, the notebook holds no grand conclusion. It has a few walks, a few weather changes, and evidence that ordinary days were noticed. That feels like enough.
